Fun – History of Glass

The History of Glass from the Experts at Apple Glass

In its naturally created form, glass is nearly as old as the earth itself. Its most common form is primarily composed of silicon dioxide and is known as silicate or soda-lime glass; this type of glass is created when lightning strikes the right type of sand. Obsidian glass is created by the extreme heat of volcanic eruptions and was used during the Stone Age to create sharp tips for weapons and cutting utensils for cooking and other activities. Man-made glass was first used in the Mesopotamian region sometime before 3000 B.C. to craft small ornamental objects used primarily for personal adornment and to decorate other items. Glass beads were prized among these early civilizations and were sometimes used in barter and trade arrangements. In Egypt, glass was crafted into urns and vessels of various colors.

The Art and Science of Glassmaking

Over the centuries, other cultures began to use glass in everyday activities and to create containers and tools with this versatile substance. By heating sand with high levels of silicon dioxide in a furnace, these early glassmakers were able to create a liquid form of glass that could be shaped as it cooled. Evidence of glassmaking activities has been found in India, Pakistan, and Nepal dating back to approximately 1700 B.C. Brightly colored glass products were created by the Roman Empire for practical and ceremonial purposes; the remnants of these items offer a unique insight into the everyday lives and activities of Roman citizens. Glass blowing was developed in or around Alexandria sometime around 100 A.D. During that same time period, new technologies were developed that allowed for the production of near-colorless glass and for more accurate shaping of glass to suit a variety of industrial and commercial needs.

The Advent of Safety Glass

Tempered glass was first patented in 1900 by an Austrian chemist named Rudolph Seiden. This new product was much more durable and resistant to impacts than the traditional plate glass commonly available at the time. Most windshields consist of two or more panes of glass bonded together with laminate to prevent shattering on impact and to protect drivers and passengers. Security glass combines even more layers of glass and laminate to present a bullet resistant and shatterproof barrier.

Today, glass is used in construction, electronics, transportation, and many other areas of modern industry.
